Over 600 events exploring the cultural and social significance of books, December 4-8 at the National Small and Medium-sized Publishers’ Fair in Rome

The 23rd edition of Più Libri Più Liberi, Italy’s premier event for small and medium-sized independent publishers, introduces a striking visual in its manifesto: a woman gazing toward the horizon from atop a book, symbolizing a viewpoint from which to observe the world. This year’s theme, reading as the “measure of the world”, frames literature as a tool for understanding and navigating the complexity of our time, inspired by the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s The Travels of Marco Polo.

Promoted and organized by the Italian Publishers Association, this literary event unfolds within the evocative setting of the Fuksas-designed La Nuvola at EUR in Rome. Here, each year, over 500 publishers and authors from across Italy gather to showcase their latest works and collections to an enthusiastic public. The fair serves as a prestigious platform for independent publishers, offering exposure that is often eclipsed by larger publishing houses. Thousands of visitors are expected to explore the diverse stands, discovering fresh trends and noteworthy new releases in the publishing world.

The event is directed by Fabio Del Giudice and chaired by Annamaria Malato, with a program curated by Chiara Valerio, focusing on travel, imagination, and cultural discovery. The packed schedule of events and guest speakers will reflect these themes, delving into the opportunities, challenges, and complexities shaping the publishing industry. A total of 670 events will take place, including author talks, readings, and musical performances, complemented by the podcast Una misura tira l’altra, which will explore the fair’s central themes across six episodes.

A standout feature of the fair will be the discussions and workshops centered on themes such as the body, identity, and history. In collaboration with the Italian Society for the Study of the Modern Age, there will be events like The Female Body: Measure of the World, exploring how the female body serves as a symbol of otherness, and History: Measure of the World, inspired by Fernand Braudel’s 1944 work, which reflects on the role of history as a measure of democracy.

The fair will also delve into gender issues with leading figures such as philosopher Maura Gancitano and Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s first female artistic director. They will discuss the evolving societal roles of women, while Alicia Giménez-Bartlett, renowned Spanish crime novelist, will present her latest work The Woman Who Runs, addressing gender discrimination and social marginalization.

Science will play a prominent role at this edition of Più Libri Più Liberi, thanks to the collaboration with Science and Virgola Festival. Mathematician Paolo Zellini and poet Valerio Magrelli will discuss the concept of infinity, moderated by Paolo Giordano. Other scientific events will include live-streamed discussions from CNR research stations in the Arctic and Antarctic, focusing on climate change and environmental issues.

An exciting highlight will be journalist and author Patrick Winn, who will present his book Narcotopia on organized crime in Asia, in dialogue with Roberto Saviano. The fair will close with a tribute to the memory of Michela Murgia, celebrating her contributions to Sardinian culture, theology, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.

As always, Più Libri Più Liberi will host the announcement of the Premio Strega Ragazze e Ragazzi 2024, which will honor the best books for young readers. This prestigious award is selected by a jury of over 2,000 students from 259 schools in Italy and abroad.

Additionally, the PLPL Business Centre will be open from December 4 to 6. This 500m² area serves industry professionals, providing opportunities for publishers to expand their visibility, network with potential clients, and strengthen existing relationships within the Italian publishing market.
