Tennis – Two-week ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome and WTA 1000 from 2023
The Main Court at Foro Italico
80th edition of Internazionali BNL d’Italia scheduled from 8 to 21 May 2023
High hopes for the revolutionary changes concerning the next Rome Masters 1000. Actually in 2023 the ATP calendar will be lengthened. The Internazionali d’Italia and the Madrid and Shanghai Masters will last 12 days, turning into a ‘mini Slam’, like the Miami Open and Indian Wells. From 2025 it will be Canada and Cincinnati’s turn. Due to structural problems, instead, the format will continue to be eight days for the Monte Carlo and Paris-Bercy tennis tournaments.
The Internazionali d’Italia championships 2023 are scheduled from 8 to 21 May at the Foro Italico in Rome. Getting the combined event formula in 2011 was an incredible goal to achieve, but this well-deserved upgrade will officially rewrite Italian tennis history. For the first time, an even more exciting show full of surprises will be offered to the hundreds of thousands fans who crowd the Foro Italico every year.
Men’s draw of the Italian Open 2023 will include even more matches: top tennis players will increase from 56 to 96. The prizemoney will also become more attractive, gradually increasing by 48% by 2025 from the current $62.5m to $76.4m (+2.5%) with further increases in the following years. Concerning the WTA 1000 category, the women’s tournament will be conformed in length and dimension to the men’s, as for same-level tournaments. Qualifications are scheduled for 8 and 9 May 2023.
«It is a historic goal, which we have been chasing for a long time. […] It is another recognition of the Italian Tennis Federation’s great organisational skills, as witnessed by important events we are organising year after year» said Federtennis President, Angelo Binaghi.
This is how Andrea Gaudenzi, President of the Professional Tennis Association, commented: « Growth of Internazionali BNL d’Italia and other Atp Masters 1000 tournaments represents a milestone for the Atp circuit. Our long-term strategic vision is to raise the level of our premium offering and the experience of tennis fans throughout the season. We are excited to offer even more action-packed events from next year and a lot of opportunities for our players».
Regarding the facilities, a partial restyling of Parco del Foro Italico is envisaged: the Main Court, which currently accommodates about 10.000 spectators, should reach 12.000. It seems, however, that the roofing project – hoped for years by the FIT – has been postponed. Therefore, the IBI 2023 should be played entirely outdoors. The construction of a third Show Court, which would increase the daily influx of fans, cannot be ruled out.
The Internazionali BNL d’Italia 79th edition was an all-time record for number of spectators, but with these changes it is not hard to believe that the next edition will produce a new one! We are also curious to find out who will hoist the trophy on 21 May next after Novak Djokovic. The 2022 triumph was the sixth for the world number 1, as he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas by a score of 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) in 1h 35 minutes.
